About
Eternal Starlight is a roguelike real time strategy / tactics game built from the ground up for VR. It takes inspiration from games like FTL, MOBAs, Homeworld and Mass Effect. The game features the ability to freely move around space to plan out the movements of your ships and use their unique technologies at the right time to turn the tide of the battle. Players can zoom in and out at will to see a view of the full battle field or zoom in to get details on a specific ship (and get a front row seat on the action).
In the game, the player is given a limited amount of time before the Kraya fleet returns to attack your home system, Proxima. During that time they can take on missions from the various alien races to try to earn their support, and gain the resources to upgrade their flagship and purchase additional vessels for their fleet. The game features 28 missions and a Skirmish mode where you can battle it out using any ships you have unlocked from the game. Missions feature randomized layouts and rewards. Endless Mode features a fully procedural campaign with randomized missions and fleets that increase in difficulty as you go.
History and Development
Development on Eternal Starlight was started in 2016 shortly after the Vive was released. We quickly realized that good VR games need to be designed specifically for VR, not just be ports of existing games. A good portion of the development time was spent refining the UI and interactions in the game and tuning the mechanics wholistically to work well within the limitations imposed by humans in VR headsets. Much experimentation was needed as there were few standards for UI interaction at the time. We came up with a locomotion system that allows you to move around comfortably while also being a core part of the gameplay.
Adapting RTS games to VR was also a challange but Eternal Starlight is both fun and a novel experience. It supports roomscale, seated and standing play and offers people a challenging but not overly physical experience. It can be played by people of all ages. Missions can generally be finished in under 15 minutes so it can be enjoyed by adults with jobs and kids.
Endless Mode launches June 2 and adds a brand new fully procedural campaign, in addition to many user requested improvements.
